This is one of those times where lack of editorial oversight and my getting free reign over this bad boy is really going to lead to some niche content here in this newsletter. But let’s try something on here. I’m going to endeavor to x-plain the forgotten 90’s “classic” Mutant X, which is now being released in a beautiful Complete Collection. By the end of this, you’ll know if this real hidden gem in the X-Canon is for you. Here we go.
X-FACTOR! After the O5 X-Men got back together (and, you know, resurrected), they created X-Factor. Posing as mutant hunters, they would actually use the hateful tips they received to track down and help mutants. Somehow spreading hateful propaganda didn’t pan out well (the road to Mutant Hell is paved with good intentions, after all), so that team disbanded and X-Factor changed shape.
GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED X-FACTOR! Under careful oversight of the federal government (and writer Peter David) X-Factor would continue on. Havok and Polaris lead the team, with the likes of Multiple Man, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, and Quicksilver rounding out the squad. The tone changed from “self-serious” to “Peter Davidian” and was all the better for it.
SO, MUTANT X! During his adventures, Havok dies. Tragic, I know. But luckily enough for him, another Havok of a parallel universe died at the exactly same time. Comic book logic dictates this means that our Havok enters the body of the other Havok, thus joining his parallel universe. There, he leads a team of sinister mutants known as The Six: Brute, The Fallen, Ice-Man, Bloodstorm, and Marvel Woman.
Now Havok must navigate this world that hates him, surrounded by sinister versions of the people he loves, and find his way home without getting caught. This is MUTANT X. This is a book that is coming to our shelves. It could be yours, if all of that sounds interesting to you. You’ve certainly never read anything quite like it.
