DC’s greatest heroes hide in the periphery. Unarguably, the greatest characters at Detective Comics are Booster Gold & Blue Beetle. Keep your Batman and gimme that Batwoman. Superman can take a hike if I can get anywhere close to Samson. Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Big Barda… Allow me to prove my point.
What was the most acclaimed and well-received DC book of 2018? Mister Miracle.
What was by far the most financially successful DC movie? Aquaman.
Consider my case well and truly rested!
With that legal matter out of the way, I can get down to the business at hand: there is a new Wonder Twins comic and it is absolutely stellar. Those shapeshifting siblings Jayna & Zan are finally back in the spotlight and they are not wasting the opportunity. This is a funny, surprising, and oh so winning book that deserves a spot on your pull list.
Given the talent at hand, this is no surprise. Two DC’s heavyhitters are up to bat on this one. Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Snagglepuss) has proved himself to be the most subversive writer in contemporary comics, constantly finding ways to surprise, delight, and move you to tears in a book about a cartoon cat. And he’s partnered up with The Great Stephen Byrne (Green Arrow, Justice League/Power Rangers). More expressive and kinetic art than Byrne’s is exceptionally rare.
To say Jayne & Zan have been underserved in recent decades is the understatement of the century. And now, with their powers combined, we finally have a reason to get invested in these two again. Plus: pet monkey! Wonder Twins #1 is available now.
