Hey readers, as promised, I wrap-up Toy Fair with some brief news snippets along with other things going on this week. The big news though is that we just got a massive Funko order in and I wanted to share with you all the cool stuff that is here.
POP vinyls have expanded to so many different properties, including movies, TV shows, Anime, Videogames and much more. Doctor Who fans can rejoice as we have received four of the series 2 POPs. River Song, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness and The Ninth Doctor are in stock now and ready to time travel into your collection. Independence Day is getting a sequel this year and Funko has merchandise coming out for that film but before they go there, they’ve given us figures of Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith‘s characters along with the frightening Alien from the original film. The Fun(ko) doesn’t stop there either. The latest Game of Thrones POPs have dropped and thus far we have Melisandre, Harpy and Jorah Marmont, in addition to the gorgeous Daenerys and Drogon POP Rides piece. Other recent arrivals include Nibbler, Zapp Brannigan and Zoidberg from Futurama, Naruto and Sasuke from Naruto, the entire line of Disney’s Zootopia characters and a restock on Bob’s Burgers POPs (sans Linda Belcher thus far) and the gorgeous Voltron piece. Harry Potter characters Dobby, Hermione in her Yule Ball outfit, a new Dumbledore and Sirius Black round out the latest and greatest in POP vinyl this week.
Funko has also teamed up with Vinyl Sugar and created the DORBZ line and the Vinyl Idolz line. New additions to the Vinyl Idolz are Stan Lee and Willy Wonka figurines. New DORBZ include Assasin’s Creed, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz characters.
Toy Fair 2016 was a fairly eventful one as far as cool new toys go. Fans of musical icons like Freddie Mercury and “Weird” Al Yankovic can look forward to figures of both this year. Freddie’s figure is coming from Bandai while Al’s is, as covered in a previous column, from NECA. Bandai’s S.H. FiguArts line is also bringing those awesome Heroes in a Half-Shell to life with their new, highly anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line. The initial four figures look to be based on the ’80’s Murakami Wolf Swenson animated series and they are GORGEOUS. I might need to invest in some of those. Speaking of the Turtles, NECA revealed they once again have a license to market TMNT toys and they are kicking it off with a quarter-scale figure of Donatello as he appeared in the 1990 New Line Cinema film. Good stuff. NECA will also be introducing Alien3 figures into their Aliens toyline and this includes the bald Ripley figure as seen in that film. And as for Alien, check out our store window for the latest life-size replica from NECA, a 3 foot Alien Egg with Facehugger. Very cool piece.
Star Wars reveals were fairly light at Toy Fair but a 3 3/4″ Maz Kanata was confirmed as part of a multipack with Finn, Rey and BB-8, Rebels character, the Seventh Sister will also be getting a 3 3/4″ figure which is exciting to me as she is voiced by none other than Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Star Wars Black 6″ adds Princess Leia Organa from A New Hope, Sabine from Rebels, an Empire Strikes Back Snowtrooper and Darth Revan.
Briefly:
Diamond Select had gorgeous figures from the X-Files‘ latest season featuring very good likenesses of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as well as an impressive Ghostbusters display that recreates the rooftop scene from the original movie which you can build if you buy all 12 of their movie figures on display at Toy Fair. I’m in for Janine, Gozer and Dana for sure.
This week marks the release of Black Canary, Volume 1 featuring the current series by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu. The fate of the Black Canary book(as well as the Arrow character- more on that in a future column) is up in the air following DC’s latest rebirth news, though we may see Dinah in the recently announced Batgirl and the Birds of Prey title. If I’m not mistaken, Canary will also show up in Batgirl’s title this week too.
That’s it for me this week- catch you all next time!
