It is a new month at Forbidden Planet and we’ve got exciting signings going on in-store this week while NYCC takes place at the Javits Center. It is a relatively light toy week though there are a couple of notable pieces coming into the store for new release day. It will be a HUGE comic week though, especially where Marvel is concerned.
The signings occurring this week will include an event with various Boom Studios creators tonight(Wed 10/7) from 7-9PM, both the CBLDF/Image Comics signing tomorrow(Thurs 10/8) at 6:30 and the Paper Girls signing with Brian K. Vaughn(Y: The Last Man, Saga) and Cliff Chiang(Wonder Woman, Green Arrow/Black Canary) following from 8-10PM. I myself am looking forward to meeting Vaughn as I think Saga is probably the best book currently out there and Chiang has done a wonderful job with the DC characters he’s illustrated. Paper Girls itself looks really fun and I can’t wait to check it out. Friday 10/9 will see an Adventure Time book signing with Martin Olson and Olivia Olson, who voice the characters of the Lord of Evil and Marceline. That signing is from 7-9PM and if our last Adventure Time signing was any indication this should be a fun one.
I am not a big Marvel Comics reader but there are a few notable releases this week. Amazing Spider-Man, Dr. Strange and Invincible Iron Man will all see #1 issues this week. There will also be a new Contest of Champions title, Avengers #0 and the long-awaited Secret Wars #6. Dynamite Entertainment will release Grumpy Cat #1 featuring everyone’s favorite meme cat in her first comic book miniseries. If you like Grumpy Cat, we have a good supply of GUND plush toys in stock as well as button sets and magnets.
Square Enix continues their Play Arts Kai line with a new entry in their Batman: Arkham Knight line as well as the second in their new Marvel Universe Variant line. Harley Quinn will come dressed as she appears in the videogame along with character appropriate accessories and an interchangeable head. Spider-Man is the new figure in the Marvel line and he will include different webbing pieces as well as multiple hands to reenact many of his famous poses. Both figures will feature the usual articulation scheme and intricate sculpting that Square Enix is known for. On the theme of imported toys we will also see the next figures in Kotobukiya’s Super Powers themed vinyl statue line and the next Marvel Bishoujo figure release. Green Lantern will be based on the old Kenner toy line and will feature interchangeable pieces to simulate the old figure’s action feature while the Wasp Bishoujo figure features Janet dressed in her gold and black costume.
Funko has been dominating our toy shelves lately and there’s a few new releases in the pipeline including POPs of Big Daddy and Booker from Bioshock, a new Frozen Anna, Irene Adler from Sherlock, the Tardis from Dr. Who, a reissue of Obi Wan-Kenobi and a Force Awakens Chewbacca from Star Wars and Katniss from the Hunger Games. Funko’s ReAction line will add Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre to their 3 3/4″ Horror Series.
I will be at NYCC on Saturday and Sunday checking out the sales floor and also try to meet the stars of DC and the CW’s forthcoming new TV show Legends of Tomorrow. A new TV season is upon us with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already returning on ABC with a strong season-opener last Tuesday and the CW shows returned last night with the Flash‘s second season premiere. Arrow Season 4 begins tonight with the new episode “Green Arrow” which finds Oliver and HER(Felicity) returning to Star City after Laurel and Thea implore him to help the team out against their new enemy Damien Darhk. Diggle is none too happy to see him after the events of last season but Oliver lends a hand and finally takes on the moniker of Green Arrow. Early reviews have come in and have been largely positive which hopefully bodes well for this season after a wildly uneven 3rd season. Personally I’m over Felicity Smoak as a character- if they can write her well this year I might turn my opinion around on her. We’ll see. That being said, I’ll still buy her action figure which should be out by the end of the month.
That’s all for me this week! Catch you guys next week!
