Everyday it seems like another beloved actor or actress that brought some of our favorite comic book or sci-fi characters to life during the 60s and 70s, even through the 80s has died. One of these was Margot Kidder, who portrayed Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane in the four Christopher Reeve Superman films spanning the years 1978-1987. Ms. Kidder died on Sunday May 13th at the age of 69. Prior to her memorable turn as Superman’s spunky and fearless significant other, Margot was in the now-horror classic Black Christmas and would go on to star in The Amityville Horror after her first Superman film. After her run on Superman, Margot would have some rough times due to her bipolar disorder but would bounce back and become a mental health spokesperson. Margot Kidder would also return to the DC/Superman universe with a guest role on the WB’s Smallville during season 4 of the series.
Though I never got to meet Ms Kidder, I will always remember her iconic portrayal of Lois Lane with great fondness. Watching the original Superman movie as a young kid, she certainly made an impression with her plucky attitude and willingness to go to any lengths to get her story. Kidder’s portrayal of Lois definitely served as a template for later incarnations of Superman’s favorite intrepid reporter both in comics and on the big and small screens. I’ve also been known to quote her famous “You’ve got me, who’s got you?!?” line at random. With Superman’s 80th anniversary as well as it being 40 years since the original film debuted, Kidder’s death has come at a time of renewed awareness of the Man of Steel and his family of characters, in fact before she passed, she was scheduled to be a guest among other Superman alumni at next month’s Eternal Con to celebrate 40 years of her star-making role. Rest in peace, Margot Kidder and thank you for being my generation’s Lois Lane.
That’s all for me this week- catch you guys next time!
