Just a few more days remain before Toy Fair takes over the Javits Center this weekend. I will be there and take as many pictures as possible, so expect a full report starting in next week’s column. This week sees a couple of noteworthy items, so let’s dig in.
DC Collectibles has a couple of new releases on the way including some brand new statues and another addition to their Batman Animated line. This week’s set features the main characters from the popular The New Batman Adventures episode: “Girls’ Night Out.” Three of the figures are repacks of the previously released Batgirl, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, plus two new figures of Live Wire and Supergirl. Each figure comes with a base and are fully articulated. Speaking of Harley, she and Mr. J are together again on a brand new statue featuring the pair as they appeared in last year’s Suicide Squad movie. Harley Quinn and the Joker are sculpted in the likeness of actors Margot Robbie and Jared Leto and stand together to wreak havoc on Gotham City. Another character from Suicide Squad that has become more known by appearing in DC Super Hero Girls and the last good season of Arrow is Katana. Katana has been featured on the DC Bombshells artwork for a few years now but is finally making her debut as a statue this week. Crafted in the same pin-up style as previous Bombshells pieces, Katana is a gorgeous figure waiting to strike you down with her signature sword.
Speaking of DC Bombshells- we should be receiving some of Cryptozoic’s Blind-boxed vinyl figures this week. Packaged in boxes resembling bomb casings, each features one vinyl figure based on the popular line of Ant Lucia statues but done in a cutesy style. If you like unique blind boxes, we just got in the new KidRobot Andy Warhol set. This set is pretty nifty in that the blind packaging looks just like Campbell’s Soup cans- just in a different color. Each can features one plush or vinyl toy based on the art of Warhol. Definitely an interesting novelty for blind box collectors out there.
Coming within the next few days if not sooner is the next wave of Marvel Legends. The featured Marvel property this time around is Guardians of the Galaxy and the wave will feature a mix of movie and comic versions of several Guardians related characters.Yondu, Drax and Star-Lord are all based on their movie looks while characters like Darkhawk, Vance Astro, Kid Nova and Angela are all based on their comic book looks. The build-a-figure for this wave is a feline character named Titus. With the Guardians movie around the corner and Marvel Legends improving both character selection and sculpts in recent years, I anticipate that these will be hot commodities.
Toy Fair is this weekend! There are some companies that I am looking forward to seeing all the surprises from including DC Collectibles, Funko and NECA. Figures I hope to see this year include:
Black Siren, Speedy and White Canary action figures from DC’s CWTV series: Black Siren was an amazing villain on the Flash while Speedy and White Canary are both mainstays on their respective series who deserve action figures.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors 30th Anniversary Nancy Thompson/Freddy Krueger two-pack from NECA: NECA says they have some stuff planned for the 30th Anniversary of the classic horror film. Let’s hope that they’ve finally decided to make a figure based on Freddy’s most memorable nemesis, Nancy who has long deserved an action figure.
Funko is continuing their Batman 66 POP line and also claims they are making smaller action figures- all I want to see is an Yvonne Craig Batgirl in both lines. Outlook could be good on these since Funko recently made an exclusive DORBZ figure of this very character. I also want a classic comic book Black Canary POP because she needs one at this point.
We shall see what Toy Fair holds- I can’t wait to see what we actually get from all the toy companies. Should be good!
