DC Toys in my opinion, did not have the strongest showing at Toy Fair this year, but there were a few factors that influenced my feelings on this. This doesn’t mean I am not looking forward to the toys that are coming out, just that I felt DC lacked any surprise or wow factor in their reveals. Let’s take a look at what’s been announced.
DC Collectibles: With a distinct lack of action figures this year, DC Collectibles was kind of a wash for me. DC Essentials is one of the only currently running DC line and only two new figures were shown for the line at Toy Fair- Black Manta and Brainiac. There was also a figure or two from the Batman: The Animated Series and DC Bombshells, and both feature Harley Quinn. The Watchmen are also coming in action figure two-packs to commemorate the recent Doomsday Clock storyline. DC’s main focus this year will be statues and designer vinyl figures. Some of the statues coming are pretty neat, including the Teen Titans series which feature the cast of the New Teen Titans which will have the ability to combine to recreate the cover of the now classic comics series. The other cool piece is the Black Lightning statue based on Cress Williams’ portrayal of the character on the CW series.
Mattel: I love DC Multiverse, but here’s my problem- all of the newly revealed figures are store exclusives. We have known about Simon Baz, Rebirth Wonder Woman, Vixen, Luthor and the Ray for a while now, but now- all the new figures are only going to be at either Toys R Us or Walmart. Walmart is getting Spoiler and Harley Quinn, while Toys R Us is slated to get Beast Boy and Kid Flash. The only other reveal was the Multiverse Penguin from Batman Returns. No word on when the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman figure is coming out either.
Diamond Select Toys: Drawing on their successful Gallery line. DC characters from the comics and live-action are planned for the line including Melissa Benoist Supergirl, Gal Gadot Wonder Woman, Comics Aquaman and plenty more. They will also be crafting DC Vinimates from Arrow, including the first Juliana Harkavy Dinah Drake Black Canary item to come to market.
Mezco: Mezco’s hit One-12 line will add new Batman figures, along with Catwoman, John Stewart, Batman Beyond, and movie versions of Wonder Woman and the Flash, amongst others. There will also be a Living Dead Doll based on Batman Returns Catwoman.
NECA: Only the previously announced Wonder Woman 1/4 scale action figure based on Gal Gadot’s take on the Amazing Amazon was shown, if I recall correctly.
Soap Studios, Tamashii Nations and Cryptozoic will also release DC characters in various shapes, sizes and formats as well.
That’s all this week- I will wrap up Toy Fair news next week!
