You can’t keep a Phoenix down forever. Eventually, she rises again from the ashes. Teammates may die. Love may leave them and be given to another. The world will endure many threats, both alien and earthbound alike. Still, eventually, she will rise again. Death’s defeat is inevitable. This week in Phoenix Resurrection #1, she will rise again. Jean Grey, who has been mourned multiple times, whose memory protects and haunts the current and former members of the X-Men, is coming back. What does this mean for the Merry Mutants? What ghosts will haunt her? What forces are at work to bring her back? Well, that’s why we read and follow the pictures, isn’t it?
Say what you will about Wolverine, there’s an argument that Jean Grey is the most iconic X-Men in the franchise’s history. Jean’s endured a lot of challenges in her life. She’s been the central figure of many of its most popular and critically acclaimed stories. And, for better or worse, her death(s) have been definitive moment(s) throughout X-Men lore. With her return, there’s no status quo that can remain the same. Plus, she’s not the only fan-favorite making a comeback in 2017. If you don’t know who I’m referring to, read Marvel Legacy #1 (you should read it anyway, it’s pretty epic).
Change is definitely in the air. With the news that the young Jean Grey’s solo series will be ending soon what implications are there for the time-trapped original five? Where will this leave team members like Rachel and will other folks that’ve been possessed by the Phoenix going to make appearances? Remember the Phoenix Five? Writer Matthew Rosenber has a monumental task ahead of him and I can’t imagine a better quality writer whose hands you want to Jean Grey’s return in. Claremont, Morrison, Pak, there’ve been some greats that’ve gotten to handle the most important moments in the history of the Phoenix and Jean Grey. How does one rise from the ashes? We’ll find out this week!
