Star Wars has always lent itself to an expanded universe. Arguably one of the richest worlds for creators to play in, there are so many amazing characters to learn about, places to explore, and major events to connect in ways that the films don’t have the running time to cover. Since Marvel has taken over the continuity reins, there’ve been plenty of characters to benefit: Leia, Lando, Chewbacca, Han Solo, Poe Dameron, Darth Maul, new addition Doctor Aphra, and, in my opinion the biggest beneficiary, Darth Vader. Now, the Star Wars cannon is making room for the one of the baddest men in the history of the Jedi: Mace Windu.
Going back to the time of the Clone Wars, we see the Jedi’s roles changing in the galaxy from peacekeepers to generals. They have been called upon to lead the Army of the Republic against their greatest threat, a threat that we readers dramatically understand will overcome them for a time. But Mace Windu doesn’t understand the fate that awaits him. All he knows is that he has been given a mission to complete, a team to recruit to get the job done, and a heavy conscience to keep from placing a wedge between him and the Force.
A timely story about a man trained to be excellent in violence but who is an advocate for peace, having to find the balance within himself without succumbing to self-doubt. After the battle on Geonosis, Mace Windu is dreading the war to come with the Separatists and their droid army. Now, given a mission that you’ll learn about in these first pages of his solo spotlight, Mace Windu will face his reservations about the losses that he witnessed on Geonosis and the many more he fears will come.
Look, it’s the closest we’re getting to a Samuel L. Jackson Star Wars movie. So, suck it up and try it out! I dare you not to buy this comic, I double dare you mother-CENSORED.
