AH! Comic Con International, that jewel in the crown of San Diego’s summer has come and gone. Now begins the time called SDCCR 2012, or the San Diego Comic Con Recovery. Pour yourself a nice cup of tea and curl up with these fun reads, all due this week, as you shake off the post-con jitters. And tick…make sure you check yourself for ticks…the con is full of them. Lousy blood suckers.
LIKE ART?
The Art of Molly Crabapple Vol. 2, Devil in the Details, is a must own, affordable art tome which shall look simply SMASHING on your coffee table, floor or toilet cistern. Molly is one of the original founders of Dr. Sketchy’s, as well as a front-line chronicler of the Occupy movement. She is the contemporary maven of alternative cartooning, and she’s earned her place in the firmament of pop art with every pen stroke. Check it out!
Meanwhile, IDW WINS it this week with a stable of top tier comics for fans of fun. Danger Girl G.I. Joe #1 should please fans of both series, and Mars Attacks #2 will, no doubt, keep up the good work started with its debut. They also have a new graphic novel detailing the life of history’s greatest conqueror entitled The Secret Battles of Genghis Khan (a personal hero of mine) as well as the first meeting of the NEW Star Trek cast (from the movies) meeting those iconic cuties, the tribbles in the Star Trek Ongoing #11.
LETS GET TANKED
Everybody Loves Tank Girl #1 is the brand new Tank Girl series from original writer Alan Martin and new artist Jim Mahfood which promises to be a real pisser! Since the original artist, Jamie Hewlett, left the book for fame, fortune, and Gorillaz related awesomeness, Martin has tried to keep the project afloat with a rotating stable of artists, most notable the shameless Hewlett lookalike known as Rufus Dayglo.
Crass and brassy with dynamic art that lept off the page, Tank Girl was the counter culture comic of the 90’s, and an inspiration to all. Mahfood’s hip-hop style and punk attitude will be a great fit! While not as technically proficient as Hewlett, Mahfood is exciting, and will make previous artists on the title look like the paid robots they really were.
Captain Marvel #1 is a new title from Marvel which will feature Carol Danvers, Marvel’s Captain Marvel a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, as opposed to DC’s defrocked Captain Marvel, now forever to be known as Shazam…the name everybody knew him as anyway.
Captain Marvel is a fun character, a young lady with a military mind who will accept nothing less than being the best hero in all of Marvel. Few characters have such a pure motivation, personal realization and public service, as their aim. Combine these traits with her being a strong woman in a predominantly male oriented market, add in that this is the first issue with a new, historical name change and this becomes a book to own not just for the story, but for the potential collectible aspect, as well.
SIT A SPELL
Yep, folks who attended the SDCC can rest their corns with a veritable plethora of sequentially artistic offerings, while the rest of us schmoes who were too broke to go can pretend we were there by surrounding ourselves with all the hot books available this week from the Forbidden Planet. And ticks.
