Sometimes we want a little escape in our lives. The world we live in is one we become too intimate with and it’s nice to read about a place far away. Maybe a world like ours but with a twist. Or perhaps a world completely alien to the one we experience. And yet when we do escape that doesn’t we’re necessarily looking for a fluffier tone. We still want something epic, even more so though because the restrictions we live with no longer apply. You just want a book that can kick ass. While also the story and characters, as different as they are, are ones you can empathize with. Such a fantastical tale is being promised in this week’s Isola #1 from Image Comics.
Brenden Fletcher (of Batgirl and Motor Crush fame) teams up with a visual master in Karl Kerschl (seriously, more of you need to be picking up Gotham Academy) to tell weave an adventure they claim is multiple decades in the making. The captain of the Royal Guard has fled the capital city with the Queen of Maar. She’s suffering under the influence of an evil spell. The only hope of curing the Queen and restoring her to the throne and the city to peace is if Captain Rook can take her to Isola. Isola, the land of the dead, is a place known only in myth and is on the other side of the world.
For an epic fantasy in the vein of a Miyazaki film, this story is aimed square at you. And there’s nothing more promising than a tempting adventure to lands far outside our everyday lives. I’m fans of both these creators, so I’m in. I’m a fan of quests, so I’m in. Right now, looking at the landscape of choices, and reading the headlines every day, a little escape in the privacy of a comic sounds just right. Pick up Isola #1 this week before it becomes the stuff of legends.
