There’s a brand-new horror book from the minds of Eisner Award Winner Jordie Bellaire and critically acclaimed artist Vanesa R. Del Rey. They’ve worked on little know titles like Pretty Deadly, Vision, Batman, Scarlet Witch, and Constantine. Finally, comes their big break with Redlands #1. Welcome to the sunny sleepy town of Redlands, Florida. The cops monitor and control this old-fashioned town. Meanwhile, a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from its citizens. Yup, hide your babies, folks, cause this is going to be a hot time in the old town tonight.
It feels like every week there’s at least one new number one issue from Image Comics. The land of opportunity for the creator-owned can’t be pinned down to one genre or style. No matter your palette, there’s something that will appeal to your tastes. Which is fun and freeing in a day where the shared universes out there feel impenetrable a lot of the time (I’m looking at you, Marvel!). Where Image has thrived is in offer self-contained series that doesn’t require you to memorize decades of history and try to keep track of what stories count in continuity anymore. With this new title, Image is one again inviting you to frighten yourselves.
There’ve been some great horror titles in the last few years, particularly from this publisher. Nailbiter is probably the most successful. Recent stabbings at the genre have included the delicious Redneck and the trippy Regression. It’s a genre that has felt underrepresented in the last several years with quality titles and finally looks poised for a resurgence. Will Redlands #1 be part of a new era of thrills, chills, and brutal brilliance? Or will this be a misfire that leaves us wishing for creators who can elevate and execute one of the most unappreciated genres of storytelling? The first issue should be revealing, even if we’re reading it through our fingers.
