PREVIEW: October 23, 2019

Amazing Mary Jane #1

As soon as Marvel announced this series, it became one of the comics I was most excited for this year.  I am so excited to see Mary Jane get a solo series. I’m also thrilled to see that Mysterio is the main antagonist. I loved his portrayal in Spider-Man: Far From Home because he was such a diva. He is the epitome of the nightmarish director/actor/writer combo. Putting both of them in Hollywood makes perfect sense with Mysterio going back to his film roots and MJ becoming the badass hero we know she is.

Hex Wives TP

This is exactly what I need before Halloween. I’m a sucker for colonial witch stories, particularly ones that have the witches in power. I want witches who are violent and vengeful. I want witches who are protective and loving of their coven. I want witches who embrace darkness, yet feel remorse for any innocents caught in the crossfire. This comic has all that and a time jump to boot. The book already gives me Lady Killer vibes, and I hope it delivers on it’s strong concept.

Cosmoknights Vol 1 TP

I was lucky enough to read this early this week, and I powered through it in one sitting. This comic is similar to the original Star Wars trilogy in the sense that it takes a lot of high fantasy elements (jousting for the favor of a princess for example) and applies them to the science fiction genre. This leads to an amazing space opera. On top of that, Cosmoknights works against problematic fantasy tropes like treating women as prizes. It directly calls out these aspects of the genre while also allowing queer women to play the most active roles in the story. If you’re looking for a non traditional knight’s tale with more than a smidge of rebellion, this comic is for you.

Black Canary: Ignite TP

DC’s most recent publications targeting younger readers have been some of my favorites. This books tend to have unique art styles and are an excellent way to introduce newer readers to DC characters. Black Canary: Ignite adds itself to this impressive catalogue. Dinah’s book follows its predecessors by developing the Black Canary beyond her superhero persona. This makes her  more relatable to readers. That along with Cara McGee’s art makes this read stand out among most superhero comics.
