Any one who ever bought manga or anime knows that as far as your wallet is concerned, crack is cheaper. I’m sure you’ve heard the very phrase, it’s been on wallets and messenger bags since I was in high school. And to many of you who feel the addiction, you know that satisfied feeling of self-medicating when you pick up the next volume of your favorite series. The reason I bring that up is to bring this up: this week’s releases are downright schizophrenic. It’s not a large week, but by golly the few genres coming in are all across the board.
Let’s start the madness with Biomega volume 5 by Tsutomu Nihei. If you remember Volume 4, then you remember the zombies damn well winning and the planet Earth itself sprouting some kind of celestial male genatalia. A whole new species of humans suddenly evolves on it’s surface and the DRF still exists hunting down dissidents. Now how will everything go even more ape-shit then turn to ruin? In some kind of crazy ass way I’m sure, which is exactly why this series is awesome. It might only take 15 minutes to read all 128 pages, but still totally worth it.
Now let’s take a step in the complete opposite direction and into the world of goddesses. The new Oh My Goddess! Volume 37 by Kosuke Fujishima is here, and I have to say, I’ve loved this series since forever ago, I owned the original OVA on VHS, so suffice it to say I’m always thrilled when the new issue comes out. Clumsy, naive, and spacey-just the qualities you want in a goddess tasked with delivering an important magical program to Belldandy. And Chrono, the newest goddess to appear in the OMG! saga, possesses these qualities admirably! Plus your fan art and letters, and more commentary by Kosuke Fujishima on the early days of the Oh My Goddess! series.
Spring-boarding back into the violent sector is Jormungand volume 6 by Keitaro Takahashi. In this newest volume, with Valmet and Jonah away in Africa, the assassins Dominique, Liliane and Grgoire make their move to wipe out Koko. Meanwhile, Valmet shakes off Jonah’s unwanted company and goes after a factory owned by her old enemy, Chan. Valmet means to settle an old score with Chan, now head of the Hong Kong-based conglomerate Taishinhai Consu. It’s an awesome series, but damn some of the names get weird.
Then, diving into the world of shoujo epic fantasies, is the Inu Yasha VizBig edition volume 6. Not much is needed to say about this one since it’s just a collected reprint of Volumes 16, 17, and 18. Do you feel the Multiple Personality Disorder brewing in the back of your skull yet? They are all great books, but I’d hazard medicating yourself with these all at once, there may be some irreparable seizing. That warning being placed, I know no one heeds warnings anyway, so enjoy 😉
