Marvel’s Legacy began last week. Wolverine returned! Black Panther has an intergalactic empire all of a sudden. The Fantastic Four seem to be making their way back home to the Marvel Universe proper. And a ton of more teases were given. Plus, we met the Avengers circa 1,000,000 B.C. It was great! Most everyone who’s read it agrees that it was a step in the right direction. Now, it’s time for the next step in Avengers #672 as Mark Waid brings two of his books on a collision course as the Avengers and Champions cross paths!
What causes these two teams to intertwine? The High Evolutionary, a twisted scientist determined to create a better world at all costs, sets the Earth on path to total annihilation. That’s it, that’s all we know. Well, to be fair there might be more to it if you’ve been following Waid’s run on both these titles in the, now, pre-Legacy, era. And therein lies the biggest question that this book will have to answer: Is this a new direction? A new jumping on point? A fresh starting place for readers who’ve been unsatisfied with the last year’s worth of stories? Or is Legacy is a gimmick to get people back into the same old, same old that Marvel’s editorial has been churning out and bleeding readers because of?
To be fair, this isn’t the only title that is going to have to answer those questions in ways that will earn back lapsed Marvel readers’ trust. But this the Avengers. This has traditionally been one of the flagship titles for their line which publishes, in the range of, ninety titles per month! If Legacy can’t leap things forward from a quality and accessibility standpoint here, what does that mean for the rest of this initiative?
The House of Ideas has a lot to prove. Will two generations of their heroes, in the hands of one comics’ most acclaimed creators be able to step up and git ‘er done? We’re going to find out this week!
