This week comes a mind-bending X-Men tale from the brains of Peter Milligan (X-Statix, Shade the Changing Man) and Wilfredo Torres (Moon Knight, Black Panther) in Legion #1! With a second season coming up in April on FX, the House of Ideas is giving the omega mutant a new adventure. Now, really though, how many of you reading this had even heard of Legion before the show blew your minds? How many had honestly even read a story about David Haller?
Let’s backtrack for a second. David Haller is the son of Professor Charles Xavier (don’t ask how/when/who with, we’re in X-Men territory it’ll just make you dizzy). David is one of the most powerful mutants EVER. Also, maybe, the most cray-cray. Like, legit bonkers. See, he has always had trouble containing the multiple personalities in his mind. And with each personality, comes a wild and dangerous mutant power. But this time there’s a terrifying new personality threatening to absorb these powers and take over David’s mind and body. In a desperate attempt to save himself, David seeks out the help of renowned young psychotherapist to the stars, Hannah Jones, to delve into his fractured mind and fight back this dark personality. But unknown to Legion….Dr Jones brings her own demons with her…
David Haller is beyond complicated. Fortunately, to take through the journey of a madman requires a man familiar with madness. And Peter Milligan fits that bill. And just maybe Wilfredo Torres does, too. After all, Mr. Milligan did create and nurture some of the most beloved and bonkers characters in X-Men lore. One thing that’s for certain? Nothing’s going to be quite what it seems. David’s always been a character worth observing but never seemed to be able to get out of his father’s spotlight. Now, perhaps with the glow of critical acclaim from another medium, he’ll finally shine. Hopefully, he won’t melt all of our brains in the process.
