Wake up NYC, it’s time to hit the streets! Join us on August 17th for a special opportunity to meet legendary NYC Graffiti artist Melvin Samuels AKA NOC 167! An unparalleled writer in the heyday of street art with a style that was an aspiration to kids with cans all over the Big Apple. He is in both quintessential Graffiti documentaries Style Wars and Wild Style, his work has been featured by everyone from the MoMa to Beyond The Streets, and in recent years has been supported by Stephen Power’s highly respected Espo’s Art Gallery in Brooklyn.

Noc 167 will be right here at FPNYC from 4 to 7PM selling prints and original art, doing sketches and black book pieces, signing copies of Style Wars and for serious fans he will be taking commission orders for bigger pieces to be delivered at a future date. This is a rare opportunity to meet one of the most respected classic graffiti artists and get a taste of what real New York is all about, so don’t blow it!

More about Noc 167:

“Melvin Samuels was born in 1960 and raised in the Bronx. He was mentored in the mid – 1970’s by STAN 153 and NIC 707, and by 1976 NOC was producing highly stylized pieces on trains and smaller airbrushed works on canvas. His style was so good that he could pick and choose whom he painted with. From 1976 to 1981 NOC 167 painted with The Death Squad, Rocstars, TMT, CIA and members of his own crew OTB.

In the early 80’s as graffiti began gaining recognition in the fine art world NOC was one of the first writers collected by a hungry public looking for the next Keith Haring. His work hung at the Basel art fair with Haring and Basquiat then shortly after was represented by the Sidney Janis gallery”. – Hobbs Gallery

“Known for being a second-generation “Wild Style” artist who employed a more three-dimensional element to the free-flowing, dynamic lettering, the art of NOC 167, exploded onto the Graffiti Art subculture scene that was gaining notoriety throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. His work appeared on more than 200 subway cars across five boroughs, on various wall murals, and in the opening credits of Charlie Ahearn’s cult film Wild Style. NOC 167 grew up in the Bronx, and was introduced to art through comics, video games, and in classes at the School of Visual Arts, which he participated in during high school.” – Artnet
