I’m gonna try to get back to regular posting on this blog. Here’s my first shot at it- a simple listing of personally recommended or otherwise notable new stuff available at Forbidden Planet NYC in-store and online for the week of 9/9/15. Here we go…
Descender TP Volume 1 – Jeff Lemire (w), Dustin Nguyen (a)
One young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from the creators of Trillium, Sweet Tooth, and Little Gotham.
Collects DESCENDER #1-6.
Sony optioned Descender for a feature film before the first issue of this series even hit. FP sold out multiple shipments of each installment seemingly over and over and over. The popularity of this series spiked again when Kotaku recommended it to Mass Effect fans. Believe the hype and pick this book up. Best excuse to give it a try? This book collecting the first six issues retails for only TEN BUCKS!
Saga TP Volume 5 – Brian K. Vaughan (w), Fiona Staples (a)
While Gwendolyn and Lying Cat risk everything to find a cure for The Will, Marko makes an uneasy alliance with Prince Robot IV to find their missing children, who are trapped on a strange world with terrifying new enemies.
Collects SAGA #25-30
This’ll probably be Forbidden Planet NYC’s single best-selling graphic novel of 2015, so I’ll leave the sales pitch to the quote above. Just wanted to call attention to it for those of you who don’t make it to the shop regularly. HEY! There’s a new Saga book out!
Chrononauts TP Volume 1 – Mark Millar (w), Sean Murphy (a)
From MARK MILLAR (Kick-Ass, Civil War) and SEAN GORDON MURPHY (Punk Rock Jesus, The Wake) comes a bromance for the ages! Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly are two buddies who love to have fun. They’re also scientific geniuses. When their research leads them to a time-traveling adventure, will they use their knowledge for the good of all mankind? Or use the space-time continuum for their own ends? This is the story of man’s first, televised steps through the time-stream and everything going wrong in the process. Collects issues #1-4.
Chornonauts is a fun, weisenheimer story (think Booster Gold/Buckaroo Banzai) with phenomenal art by Sean Murphy. Again- just TEN BUCKS for the first issues of an exciting new series.
Star Wars Journey to The Force Awakens Shattered Empire #1 – Greg Rucka (w), Marco Checchetto (a)
For the first time in the new Star Wars canon, journey with us into the time after the end of Return of the Jedi! Writer Greg Rucka (PUNISHER, WOLVERINE, Gotham Central) and artist Marco Checchetto (AVENGERS WORLD, PUNISHER) take us past the destruction of the second Death Star into the chaos of a Shattered Empire.
The spate of Force Awakens STUFF hitting the market has been on for a week now, and we’re only getting started. Today we get something similar to last week’s big novel release, Aftermath, a Marvel comic detailing the canonical events after RotJ. Writer Greg Rucka seems to be a chief figure in helping create the new lore, as this is his second foray into it so far- his first, last week’s Smugglers Run, was well-regarded.
Head Lopper #1 – Andrew Maclean (w,a)
Action. Adventure. Fantasy. Decapitation!
ApocalyptiGirl creator ANDREW MACLEAN brings this critically acclaimed indie hit to Image Comics! The dark humored quarterly adventure begins with a double-sized first issue, with eighty pages of story and a premium pin-up gallery for the regular price of just $5.99!
“HEAD LOPPER is what you’d get if Mike Mignola wrote an issue of Brian Wood’s Northlanders by way of James Stokoe’s ORC STAIN.” – Multiversity Comics.
Fun fun fun!
