God Country was a must-read series from Image Comics. Now, rather quickly (and smartly of the publisher) an easy-to-read trade paperback comes to the shelves. If you missed out on getting to the know Emmett Quinlan and his mythical journey, now is your chance to consume everything in one go. And man is it a fulfilling treat for the senses. For reals, this one goes to the top of your Buy Pile!
The solicits have called this a cross between Southern Bastards and American Gods. I personally enjoy describing it as southern fried Thor. Whatever your taste, if you love character-driven, high stakes fantasy that has something to say about family and mortality, you’ll want to check this one out. Yes, I’m rambling, because when it comes to great stories, you can’t oversell their importance. These days, escapism, catharsis, provocative questions are something we all could use and God Country provides all of the above.
Emmett Quinlan is an old widow fading into dementia. Emmett’s violent outbursts have become unbearable for his son, who moved his family back to his family home to look after Emmett. Heck, at this point, even the cops are pleading for Emmett to be taken to a home. Except the fates seem to have a different path for Emmett in mind. A twister levels the home and surrounds the West Texas town. Out of the wreckage comes a fully functioning Emmett Quinlan, restored in mind and body…And wielding a big ass sword.
The sword is enchanted and is being sought after by the gods of a far away realm. When these immensely powerful beings come to claim the one weapon that’s given Emmett his life back, you can bet the old man is going to fight fiercely to keep his sanity for his family. It’s a tale that needs telling, ready to experience it for yourself?
