Tabletop gaming is having its greatest renaissance since the Satanic Panic of the 80’s and Tom Hanks made that movie that said Dungeons & Dragons was going to make your kids kill people in the woods. Between Community and Stranger Things, and the prevalence of podcasts like The Adventure Zone and Critical Role, the influence of tabletop roleplaying is everywhere. The game itself is storming into comics, currently teaming up with Rick & Morty for the ultimate bit of public synergy. And with the launch this week of DIE #1, we have our best shot yet at a beautiful dark fantasy tabletop story.
DIE is a pitch-black fantasy where a group of forty-something adults have to deal with the returning unearthly horror they barely survived as teenage role-players. It’s the best parts of It, Stranger Things, Jumaji, and The Neverending Story. It’s also a brand new #1 from Image Comics and should be damn near the top of your pull list.
This new pitch black fantasy comes to us courtesy of Keiron Gillen (Uncanny X-Men, The Wicked + The Divine) and Stephanie Hans (Journey Into Mystery). It’s an alternative fantasy superteam. Gillen is one of the big guns in comics today, what with Wick-Div burning up the sales charts and a fancy reprinting of his X-Men run on the way. And Hans has proven herself again and again to be a master of sequential fantasy. Somehow this is only her first ongoing title, but it’s sure to be a stunning debut.
DIE #1 debuts this week in the midst of a tremendous run of great #1’s from Image Comics. The hot winning streak only continues. Be sure to grab this now before it takes off, becomes a big selling trade, gets an inevitable TV or movie adaptation, and you can walk around saying you were there from the beginning!
