Dan Slott has been THE architect for all things Spider-Man for a decade now. He was part of the Brand New Day braintrust that also saw him working with collaborators through one of my favorite Spidey sagas, The Gauntlet. Then, having earned the spot, he led Spider-Man through a Big Time. Spider-Island was a kid’s fantasy come to life. Next he sought to write a Superior Spider-Man wherein Mr. Slott scribed the death of Peter Parker and replaced his consciousness with that of Doctor Octopus. In the years since that epic change to the status quo, Peter came back, started his own company, lost it, dealt with a omniversal threat in the Spider-Verse storyline and now is back at the Daily Bugle as a science editor. Now comes the finale. And Mr. Slott promises that the Amazing Spider-Man will go down swinging!
The greatest foe that Ol’ Webhead’s ever had is Norman Osborn, the terrifying Green Goblin. Norman Osborn has killed Gwen Stacy (after siring her twins in the most ick storyline in ASM history!), been killed, resurrected, lead the Thunderbolts, killed the Skrull Queen in Secret Invasion, remodeled and led S.H.I.E.L.D. in his vision, led a war against the Asgardians, and that just gets you through May of 2010! It is only fitting that he be the Big Bad for the final Dan Slott and Stuart Immonen tale. Currently, he Norman’s without the abilities that allowed him to be the psychotic menace of old. So, he’s bonded with the Carnage symbiote to become something…stranger. Perhaps he is at his most deadly. We’ll see…
Then there’s the rekindling romance between Peter and Mary Jane Watson. And damn if there aren’t some tingles about a certain retcon being re-retconned. For years they’ve been kept apart. Now, a new time is dawning for Peter and MJ, maybe. Will the old arguments of why they should be apart rear their ugly logical heads? Or will a fresh start be given to their pairing? Of course, with Norman at his peak crazy, any person of affection in the Amazing Spider-Man’s life is not safe. The stakes are being raised and the tension is set to take off as we approach the eighth hundredth issue.
