Earth’s Mightiest Hero. A terran Air Force Pilot with the powers of a Kree Warrior. Head of Alpha Flight, friend of the X-Men, star of an upcoming megahit film. There’s lots to know about Carol Danvers, the greatest of the Captains Marvel, and oh so many great places to start. Allow me to set you off on the right foot.
X-Men Grand Design
No book better sums up Cap’s place in X-Men history than Ed Piskor’s incredible retelling of X-Men lore. Her adversarial relationship with Rogue is one for the record books. Whether it’s as Ms. Marvel or Binary or simply Carol, she is an indelible piece of mutant history.
Captain Marvel by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Undoubtedly THE iconic Captain Marvel run of the modern era is the one that gave her that title. Ditching the “Ms” and putting on a pair of pants, this is the run that sets the table for who Captain Marvel actually is. Her history and future are explored with equal grace and excitement and it set the table for everything that would come after.
Captain Marvel: Rise of Alpha Flight by Anka, Fazekas, & Butters
An underrated run in the Canon of Cap is this short-lived adventure series written by Tara Butters & Michele Fazekas (of Agent Carter) and drawn by the great Kris Anka. This is Cap’s big jump into being Earth’s defender from extraterrestrial threats, and it’s a downright fun book that should have had a much longer run.
Life of Captain Marvel
Margaret Stohl & Carlos Pacheco wove a beautiful story of Then & Now. At times rewriting the what we know about Carol Danvers, at others reaffirming what we’ve always known. It’s an achingly sincere and touching five issue series that sets you up with everything you’ve ever needed to know about our cosmic defender.
Captain Marvel #1
And there’s just no better way to get to know a character than a brand-spanking new first issue. Captain Marvel is back on Earth and New York City’s least-upstanding are none-too-happy about it. There is an absolutely perfect creative team working on this one. Kelly Thompson (West Coast Avengers, Mr. & Mrs. X) is writing, with Carmen Carnero (X-Men Red, Dragon Age) bringing that powerhouse art. This is going to be a crackerjack series, so get in now so you can say you were on the ground floor for this one.
