Black Cat: Marvel’s Best Unlucky Charm

Whether you’re superstitious or not, there’s no better way to prepare for Friday the 13th than with Black Cat, Marvel’s best unlucky charm. Felicia Hardy has captivated the hearts of many heroes, villains, and Forbidden Planet employees, especially with her current run.

Felicia is Fun, Fresh, and Free of Baggage

Writer Jed MacKay and artists Travel Foreman and Michael Dowling create a fun and fresh comic for the iconic thief. At times decades of lore make super hero comics hard to dive into for new readers. This comic avoids that. At most it incorporates the basics of the Marvel universe, things ingrained into pop culture nowadays. The comic has plenty of breathing room so it can just have fun with out being weighed down by years of history.

Hero of the Week

While this comic is free of decades of Marvel baggage, it is still very much part of the Marvel universe. The formula for this comic is similar to that of a monster of the week TV show, substituting monsters for super heroes. Black Cat, as established years ago with her dynamics with Peter Parker and Cindy Moon, works best when interacting with other costumed characters. In Grand Theft Marvel, Felicia steals from both Doctor Strange and the Fantastic Four. In both cases, readers see how playful and charming she is, winning over Johnny Storm and Strange’s magical creatures with ease. Black Cat even toys with new characters, teasing them to no end. While Marvel’s more serious comics about right and wrong can be amazing, it’s refreshing to see a protagonist enjoy the fun of the action regardless of what’s morally right and wrong.

Hardy’s Four

That being said, Felicia cares. She has a big heart, and it comes out around her crew. At it’s core this is a heist comic. Like the best heist narratives, the crew is as important as the boss in charge. The crew is full of charming characters. The suave mentor – Black Fox. The know it all scientist and magic skeptic – Dr. Boris Korpse. The lovable lug who’s a brick wall – Bruno Grainger. All of these characters have charisma and Felicia’s heart. Regardless of how different these characters are, no matter how cut throat they are, it is without a doubt that they have each other’s backs.

More Than a Thief

Black Cat is an excellent thief and boss, and her powers give her an extra advantage. The comic finds ways to charmingly use her powers, and Issue 3 best captures the potential for her powers. While breaking into Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, Felicia and her crew come face to face with a diabolic sorcerer. While he has magic on his side, Felicia can make his magic useless. Magic is about probability, which Felicia has control over since she causes bad luck. This issue is so much fun because Felicia is in her eliminate.

Black Cat’s comics are pure fun. They are the perfect blend classic comic charm, comedy, and criminal activity.
