Black Mask Studios is expanding the world of its headline grabbing Black that this writer implored you to pick of the first collection of. You did? That’s a good reader! Well, now we’re going to head into some new territory as the creators begin building the mythos one badass character at a time. Black AF: America’s Sweetheart is an original graphic novel out this week that asks a direct question: Can a black woman be America’s first superhero? And by black woman, we’re talking about a 15 year-old girl living in rural Montana.
Eli Franklin is a teenager who just so happens to be the most powerful person on the planet. Her life hummed along but then then the greatest global secret came out to the public: Only black people have superpowers. Eli decides to make her debut as the superhero Good Girl (a nice wholesome apple pie invoking moniker). She’s on a mission to win over hearts and minds. With the world fearing empowered blacks she plans to be the bridge that unites the country. It’s a noble goal. Unfortunately, a super-terrorist threatens to undo everything Eli has been working toward. Haters gonna hate. Now, will donning a patriotic costume be enough for Good Girl? Will Eli be able to counter the bigotry poising the world and emboldening criminals?
I wrote before how the world of Black is not going to treat relevant topics subtly. Nor should it. We’re living in times where consequences to racial divides across all mediums and manners of law come at us daily. Why not raise your voice if you believe there’s something worth hearing and people willing to listen? There’s a bravery in this venture, just like there’s a bravery in a young woman who believes that unity is an action that can overcome prejudice, racism, and blind hatred. Sometimes we can hold inspiration in our hands and I encourage you to do so this Wednesday.
