Batman White Knight #3 is upon us. Has it only been a few short weeks? Between all the shenanigans in Dark Nights: Metal and Doomsday Clock this title has gone to the back burner of a lot of readers’ minds. Well, the good news is that it looks like Sean Murphy is bringing everything to a boil in his Batman and Joker epic. Jack Napier, the reformed Clown Prince of Crime is taking his war to rid Gotham City of Batman to the next phase and tragedy will strike the Dark Knight! Again! Because he’s Batman and there has to be tragedy.
The last issue of Batman White Knight delivered some whopping revelations. Perhaps one of the most talked about has been the path of Harley Quinn. The Joker’s main squeeze has undergone some striking transformations in the past several years, especially since the dawn of The New 52 era at DC Comics. And some argue not all of the changes have been the most affirming or empowering. Sean Murphy is looking to bring back some of the classic aspects of one comics’ most captivating characters. Her role to play in this epic struggle between Jack and Batman could be extremely controversial. I’m intrigued to see what comes next from the former Mister J’s right hand woman.
When last we saw Jack and Harley, they’d used the Mad Hatter’s tech to put some major villain heavyweights under his control. What will he do now to accomplish his greater good for Gotham City? Batman’s going to need to be at his best to undo the damage done to his reputation. With public opinion in freefall, the Dark Knight will apparently suffer a loss that could play right into the hands of Jack’s long-game. Bruce Wayne and his alter ego is primed to fail his lifelong mission. Is this finally how the Joker becomes the hero we deserve? Or will all his good intentions still lead to his descent into super villainy?
