It’s no secret that this is a big month for Superman. We’re a week from the monumental Action Comics #1000. DC Comics is building buzz this week with Action Comics: 80 Years of Superman! This hardcover will pay homage to the greatest superhero of all-time (yeah, I said it!) by revising some of the most seminal stories from the past. But wait! There’s more! Not only do you get classic stories including character debuts, DC’s also offering essays and a never before published Golden Age story. All of this is curated by the living legend, Paul Levitz.
Quite frankly, the best hype is to list some of the highlights from this collection:
- A new five-page story “The Game,” written by Paul Levitz with art by Neal Adams
- “The Coming of Superman,” from ACTION COMICS #1
- “The Terrible Toyman!” from ACTION COMICS #64 featuring the debut of Toyman
- “The Super-Key to Fort Superman,” from ACTION COMICS #241 featuring the first appearance of the Fortress of Solitude
- “The Super-Duel in Space,” from ACTION COMICS #242featuring the debut of Brainiac
- “The Supergirl from Krypton!” from ACTION COMICS #252 featuring the debut of Supergirl
- “If Superman Didn’t Exist…” from ACTION COMICS #554
- “The Boy Who Stole Superman’s Cape,” from ACTION COMICS #0
- “The Mystery of the Freight Train Robberies,” from ACTION COMICS #1 featuring the debut of Zatara
- “Superman Takes a Wife,” from ACTION COMICS #484
- “A Hero’s Journey,” from ACTION COMICS #800
- “The World’s Greatest Heroine!” from ACTION COMICS #262
- “Squatter,” from ACTION COMICS #584
This is going to be the most overstuffed collection of Superman stories in history. This could be a once in a lifetime kind of hardcover featuring some of the greatest creators in the history of comics, from Siegel and Schuster to Len Wein to John Byrne to Grant Morrison to Curt Swan to Gil Kane and many more. This week begins the celebration for the return of the red underpants. Won’t you join in?
