This week we have a team of two members from DC Comics’ company defining Trinity. In Brave And The Bold: Batman & Wonder Woman #1 the World’s Greatest Detective will be challenged with a mystery carrying the highest stakes: the murder of a god!
The Brave And The Bold is a concept that DC’s apparently dusting off. For a long time it was a Batman focused title. Each issue or mini-arc would feature the Dark Knight teaming up with a different hero (and sometimes villain) to see how the pointy-eared one would play with others. There have been stellar stories and forgettable years. A ton of big name creators from Neal Adams to Mark Waid and in the last iteration J. Michael Straczynski lent their considerable talents to the legacy of the series. And man, the hits and have been amazing but the misses have been cringeworthy.
It’s a, pun intended, bold choice to put Liam Sharp‘s name on the relaunch a series with a lot of history. Fortunately, Mr. Sharp is one of the best artists in the game and his Wonder Woman run with Greg Rucka saw him step his skills to a whole new level (this writer may or may not have commissioned a gorgeous Cheetah headshot from him).
Wonder Woman and Batman will investigate a Celtic god’s murder which threatens a war between the fairy folk and a possible breach between worlds. The premise suits both of them, having read the first issue it’s nice to see there’s ZERO romantic intimation between the two, and Mr. Sharp’s duties on art will rival any of his masterful pages from his recent run at DC. While there are, what feels like, a million Batman books out there, there could be more Wonder Woman books. And if this is what it takes to get another great one on the shelf then count me in!
